Frequently Asked Questions
What if I'm in crisis or need urgent help?+
Caritas Counselling is not a crisis or emergency service, and messages are not monitored at all times. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. If you are in crisis or having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline), available 24/7. For mental health and substance use support and referrals in Ontario, contact ConnexOntario at 1-866-531-2600.
Aren't people who go to therapy weak?+
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In our work together, I'll help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
What's the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?+
The difference is between someone who can do something, and someone who has the training and experience to do that same thing professionally. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way — teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself.
Why shouldn't I just take medication?+
Medication can be effective, but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counselling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths so you can accomplish your personal goals.
How long will it take?+
Unfortunately, this isn't possible to say on a general FAQ page. Everyone's circumstances are unique to them, and the length of time counselling can take depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counselling in the first place. You and your therapist can work together to establish a plan of treatment and discuss possible timelines more specifically for your particular needs.
Can I use insurance?+
Often insurance will cover Psychotherapy. However, it is the responsibility of the client to determine what their particular insurance plan and provider will cover, as plans differ. We do not offer direct billing, so clients pay for their sessions directly and submit receipts to their insurance provider for reimbursement.
